The House that Heaven Built by Japandroids

Japandroids are 2 Canadian dudes who makes as much noise as 2 dozen dudes (regardless of nationality). Their sophomore record, Celebration Rock, is aptly named. From what I was able to piece together from their rather opaque lyrics, its 8 songs celebrate life in the short-term as they sing about various forms of shit that, if it doesn’t kill you, will give you amazing memories to reminisce upon when you’re old.

Sonically this album is a better record than their debut, Post-Nothing.  The songs soar into (dare I say) stadium-ready choruses and scream-alongs.  My biggest gripe with this band remains their lyrics.  By and large, their lyrics are abstract, but not vivid enough to create interesting mental images (e.g., from The House that Heaven Built: “I settled in slowly to this house that you call home/ To blood and breath, fair flesh and bone" or from Adrenaline Nightshift: "When I muscle up some money / I’ll rattle the sabre of the streets / Cause death has no respect for love / And youth no respect for me”).  As such, I find myself listening to the vocals as just another musical instrument, not as a means to transport myself into whatever world they are trying to create.

I might not be head over heels in love with Celebration Rock but several of its songs do make me want to jump in my car and speed down the 405 (The House that Heaven Built, The Nights of Wine and Roses, Younger Us, Fire’s Highway). And by that (given LA traffic) I mean maybe getting up to 30 mph for a quarter mile between La Cienega and Western (if I’m lucky).

Album rating: 2/4 (stream it)

When the soul of the city was laid to rest and the night forgotten and left for dead
I happened at a house built of living light
Where everything evil disappears and dies

When they love you and they will
Tell them all, they’ll love in my shadow and if they try to slow you down
Tell them all, to go to hell

I settled in slowly to this house that you call home
To blood and breath, fair flesh and bone
Blush of our bodies in the heat of the night
All day, the day after, reddened the skies

When they love you and they will
Tell them all, they’ll love in my shadow and if they try to slow you down
Tell them all, to go to hell

It’s a lifeless life with no fixed address to give
But you’re not mine to die for anymore, so I must live
Born of a bottle from heaven’s hand
And now you know, and here I am

When they love you and they will
Tell them all, they’ll love in my shadow and if they try to slow you down
Tell them all, to go to hell

When they love me and they will
I’ll tell them all, they’ll love in your shadow and if they try to slow me down
I’ll tell them all, to go to hell
