SXSW 2013, Day 2
Café Tacuba, Mexico’s genre-shifting alt-rock veterans, rocked Stubb’s BBQ at SXSW 2013 as part of an ecclectic lineup at the NPR showcase. Sandwiched in-between Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Café Tacuba had their work cut out for them as a good portion of the crowd was here for those other bands. But none of that seemed to matter once Rubén Isaac Albarrán Ortega and company took the stage. They launched into a short, but thorough set covering ground from their 1994 masterpiece Re to 2013’s solid, although somewhat disjointed, El Objeto Antes Llamado Disco. Even after all these years, Café Tacuba continues to put on a frenetic live show that got everyone in the crowd, even the most hardcore Nick Cave fans, to get their groove on. Here’s hoping we get two more decades (at least) from this Mexico City group.
